The Trade Union Group of MPs is made up of those backbench Labour Members
of Parliament who belong to unions affiliated to the Party. In effect, the whole
Parliamentary Labour Party, excluding members of the Government are members
of the Trade Union Group of MPs.
The members of ten affiliated unions organise into separate functioning groups
with their own officers. These ten are Amicus (although the GPM Sector has
a separately organised group of MPs), ASLEF, Community, CWU, GMB, NUM,
TGWU, UCATT, UNISON and USDAW. The officers of these groups form the
Executive Council of the Trade Union Group of MPs and elect the officers of the
Trade Union Group.
Labour Members of the European Parliament also organise into Trade Union
Groups with Amicus, GMB, TGWU and UNISON all being represented. As with MPs, there is an overarching Trade Union Group of MEPs.
Labour Members of the Scottish Parliament also organise into the Labour Trade Union Group. This group meets with the Scottish TUC every month, when parliament is sitting. Labour MSP's are also organised into their own Trade Union Groups.
The Welsh Assembly does not currently have a trade union group but the Labour Party Group Secretary and contact on the Welsh Assembly is Lynne Neagle AM.
