Glenis has been the Labour Member of the European Parliament since February 2006. During that time, Glenis has fought hard for the rights of people in the East Midlands. She has campaigned for increased protection for workers from third party violence, free fruit for schools, increased toy safety legislation and for an increase on the ban on tobacco advertising.
Glenis says:
It is an honour to represent the people of the East Midlands in the European Parliament. I know that people across the East Midlands all have very different views on Europe. However, the EU plays an important part in our everyday lives, from the economy through to vital funding for projects within the East Midlands. That’s why it is so important that you are properly represented.
Unlike the Tories, I work hard to make sure that Europe benefits the people of the East Midlands. The Tories have voted against legislation that will protect workers from third party violence and they voted against increased rights for agency and temporary workers.
Born in County Durham, Glenis moved to Mansfield with her family when she was nine. She has lived and worked in the East Midlands ever since.
Glenis worked as a Medical Scientist from 1969-1987, and was then employed as Parliamentary Assistant to Alan Meale, MP for Mansfield 1987-1990. From 1990-2006 Glenis worked as a trade union officer for the GMB Union in the East Midlands.
She became Labour MEP for the East Midlands in 2006, following the death of her predecessor Phillip Whitehead MEP. Further details about Glenis’s work as MEP can be found at her website.
