Genuine debate needed for Royal Mail future
05.05.09
The Communication Workers Union today (Tuesday) welcomes the document ‘Modernisation by Consent’ published today by Compass which provides an alternative model for keeping Royal Mail in the public sector.
Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said: “Nobody wants privatisation and everyone wants modernisation.
“Compass have today outlined in sensible terms a way that the government can meet the wishes of the public and its MPs while transforming the company’s financial and managerial make-up.
“The government has been inviting suggestions so it is disappointing that they have dismissed this proposal out of hand.
“Postal services remain vital to the public and the economy - this week’s mailing of Swine Flu information packs is testament to that.
“Royal Mail is outperforming all its competitors and is making record profits. This is a successful company which will gain greater strength from modernisation in the public sector.”
