Trade unions play a vital role in our party. Without the work of trade unionists, Labour would not be in power. Without the input of the trade unions to our party, Labour would be disconnected from working people in the country. The Labour party benefits hugely from a strong trade union movement.
Equally, trade unions need a strong Labour party in Government. Over the last ten years, we have delivered much of the trade union agenda – I know because I worked as the link man between the unions and the government during the first term. The list is long, but a minimum wage, new union rights in the work place and extra days paid holiday stand out as achievements delivered for working people.
But more recently, we have lost our way. The failure to introduce a strong Agency Workers Bill to parliament, the failure to act on Working Time, and the private sector’s creeping involvement in our public services also stand as issues that need to be addressed.
As deputy leader, I will be standing up for the views of trade unionists. I will make the case for a progressive agenda that can appeal to all voters in Britain, arguing for more job security, affordable housing and strong public services. I will also make the case for collective bargaining.
At the same time as debating the new policies we need, we also have to acknowledge that the party has an uphill struggle to win the next election. We have lost half of our members, our councillor base is at a 30 year low, and activism is falling. Better policies can help us regain the trust of the electorate, but we also have to get organised as a campaigning party.
As well as being the voice of ordinary members, I will work to get the party ready for the next election. I am the candidate outside of government in this election. I am also the only the candidate promising to be a full-time deputy leader, turning down the offer of any departmental portfolio. I will spend 100% of my time building links with local trade unions at the grassroots, introducing new organisers on the ground, and helping get the party ready to take on the Tories.
We can win the next election, we can pursue the progressive policies which will change Britain for the better. If you want that to happen, please choose change.
Please get involved in this election campaign. It’s your party, and your decision. You can find out more about my campaign by visiting www.joncruddas.org.uk
