Welcome to the February 2008 edition of E-News from UnionsTogether.

In this edition we have a message from London Mayor, Ken Livingstone, & invites to a number of events in London where you can meet with Ken and let him know your views. We also have details of a UCATT campaign on Pleural Plaques & invites to two Compass events.

We are also pleased to announce that following Labour's unions' successful campaign, Andrew Miller MP's Temporary and Agency Workers (Equal Treatment) Bill achieved its Second Reading on Friday 22nd February. Almost 150 Labour MPs stayed down in Westminster to support the Bill's progression. Thanks to everyone who supported the campaign - and we will be keeping the pressure up as the Bill continues its progress through Parliament.

Join us in South London to Meet the Mayor on Tuesday 11 March, 6:30 for 7:00pm, at Lambeth Town Hall, see below for details.

Join in our Trade Union Campaign Day on Sunday 9th March. In eight locations across London we will be involved in local activities. Just one hour of your time can help keep Ken! See below for details.

Ken Livingstone's campaign has launched a campaign website ahead of the elections on May 1st.

Visit the site here:

www.kenlivingstone.com

May 1st will see an election of tremendous importance to trade unionists in London. Ken's record on public services, the London Living Wage and the Freedom Pass for older Londoners show that he shares our values. In contrast, Boris Johnson and the Conservatives represent the failed policies of the past. Boris Johnson's jokes might be amusing, but his right-wing policies won't be so funny if he wins.

Please take a second to visit Ken's website and sign up for email news and alerts from his campaign team. These emails are a great way of keeping in touch and learning about new ways to support Ken's re-election.

UCATT Pleural Plaques Campaign

On 17th October 2007 the House of Lords held that asbestos related Pleural Plaques would no longer constitute a compensatable medical condition. UCATT hopes the UK Government will follow the Scottish Parliament lead and bring forward fresh legislation to reverse the Lords decision and that any compensation for contracting Pleural Plaques will not be considered full and final should a person later suffer from further asbestos related disease.

We need you to take action - email the Rt Hon Jack Straw MP Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice & your local Labour MP to ask them to support the UCATT campaign.

Visit www.unionstogether.org.uk/issues/pleuralplaques.html to contact your MP about this issue

UNITED FOR KEN: 'Time to stand and fight to ensure that Livingstone wins'

Sign up to the statement at: www.compassonline.org.uk/campaigns

Leaders from across the centre-left, civil society and from all corners of the UK, are urging every progressive voter; activist and organisation to get behind the campaign to re-elect Ken Livingstone, in a statement co-ordinated by Compass.

Left leaning celebrities, academics, writers, journalists, campaigners, trade unionists and politicians are backing Livingstone because they know London faces a clear choice: to build on the progressive achievements of the last eight years or watch it go up in smoke if Johnson wins. The Tories and the Evening Standard are trying to destroy Livingstone because his defeat would pave the way for a Conservative general election win, destroying the hopes of progressives and leave the most vulnerable in the Capital prey to the reactionary politics of the right-wing Johnson.

High-profile signatories to the statement include: Diane Abbott MP (Hackney North & Stoke Newington); Professor Zygmunt Bauman; Sir Jeremy Beecham, LGA Labour Group Leader; Tony Benn; Billy Bragg, Singer and Song Writer; Beatrix Campbell, Writer and Broadcaster; Jon Cruddas MP, (Barking & Dagenham); Billy Hayes, General Secretary, CWU; Kate Hudson, Chair, CND (in a personal capacity); Sunder Katwala, General Secretary, The Fabian Society (in a personal capacity); Baroness Helena Kennedy QC; Neal Lawson, Chair, Compass;
Professor Ruth Lister CBE; Professor Julian Le Grand; David Martin MEP; Robert Philpot, Director, Progress; Dave Prentis, General Secretary, UNISON; Lord David Puttnam CBE; Tony Robinson, Actor and Broadcaster; Professor Richard Sennett LSE; Polly Toynbee, Journalist; Jon Trickett MP (Hemsworth); Gemma Tumelty, President, NUS (in a personal capacity); Chuka Umunna, Compass.

The statement reads: "On 1st May London will elect a Mayor. It will either be Ken Livingstone or Boris Johnson. Livingstone has been the front runner for re-election but alarm bells may be sounding."

"Livingstone's record is impressive. Not least the Congestion Charge, which was as brave a political move as anyone has made in British politics for years. On this issue Livingstone made the weather against the odds. Millions now enjoy better and cheaper public transport. When we look around London we see a public realm that has been transformed with renovated squares, parks and river banks for everyone to enjoy and share. It is a London at ease with its multi-cultural identity, and Livingstone has played a decisive role in that. This is the politics of equality and real opportunity."

"London is a fairer, more tolerant and sustainable city because of Ken Livingstone and all that is put in jeopardy unless we act."

"The battle lines are clear. We urge every progressive voter, activist and organisation to get behind the campaign to re-elect Ken Livingstone."
