The Labour Supporters Network (LSN) is one of the next steps from the 21st Century Party proposals agreed by Annual Conference last year. During last year’s General Election many people registered their support for the Party and we want to maintain their support and to regularly communicate with them.
Evidence from local parties and some of our elected representatives shows that there are voters who support Labour and would like to be kept in touch with the Party on a regular basis, nationally and locally. Many people share our values and support the party but, for whatever reason, do not wish to join as a member.
Anyone can register as a Labour supporter; it is free and allows us to keep in touch with each other. Whilst much of our communication is via email it is not essential and local parties and elected representatives are also keeping in touch using direct mail and tailored letters to supporters.
We are also establishing specialist networks, focussing on particular policy areas. Currently we have education, health, international and community networks. These specialist networks provide the ability to tailor the information that an individual receives from the party. Every person has an individualised preference page that they can amend so that they can receive more of fewer communications from us.
But the LSN is also about two-way communications - we want to hear from our supporters in local communities. Already there have been a number of online chats and question and answer sessions with ministers as well as several telephone conference calls to allow supporters to engage in a dialogue with ministers. These specialist networks will be developed further to take full advantage of the new technologies that are available to us.
Large numbers of trade unionists support Labour and indeed help us in election campaigns, yet we do not keep in touch between elections. I want to encourage all trade unionists who support us to register as Labour Supporters – it’s free and easy to do, just visit www.labour.org.uk and sign up to the Labour Supporters Network.
