TULO Newsletter April 2006

In these last few days of the local elections, we are fighting for every vote.

Every single day there is a Labour Government people’s lives are changed for the better. Tomorrow, you will see our latest Party Election Broadcast which shows just how much Britain has changed for the better and is on the move.

There are record numbers in work and mortgage rates are low.  After years of Tory recession and mass unemployment, our towns and cities have become engines of growth once again.

It is our Labour councils who are leading the way in tackling anti-social behavior, keeping council tax down and working for safer, cleaner and greener communities.

Let’s be clear. I know the last few days have been difficult.  But our Labour Government and Labour councils have achieved extraordinary things in partnership with local people, community groups and business. Let’s remember the Britain we inherited 10 years ago with communities abandoned and people tossed onto the scrap heap. Let’s ask our people to look around at the changes made to their community. It has taken us ten years to deal with the Tories’ legacy. It only takes one council meeting where Labour isn’t in control to put this progress at risk.

These elections are about the people who live on the estates who need a Labour council to take on the yobs.  These elections are about the people who rely on a Labour Government and a Labour council because they can’t afford to buy their way out of local services.  These elections matter to our people and that is why we are fighting for every single vote.

We have to tell Labour supporters, staying at home or casting a protest vote on Thursday could mean waking up with a Tory or Liberal council on Friday.

Thank you all for your tremendous effort so far. The last 48 hours of this campaign are critical.  Between now and polling day, there will be 1.7 million leaflets or direct mail letters delivered and 2 million doorstep or telephone conversations will take place.

We face a tough fight in the next few days but if we do not speak up for our communities, no-one will. In the days ahead in every street, every estate and every community let’s have a sense of pride in what we have done and confidence in what we can achieve and keep fighting for every vote.

Ian McCartney MP

Labour Party Chair

PS. With only a few days left, it's down to the wire in our target seats. Can you spare a few hours on polling day to help Labour win in a close area?  Please contact your regional Labour Party office to find out how you can make a difference.
